Genesis of Plate Tectonics

1950 - 1976

The period 1950-1976 marks the consolidation of a unified geophysical–geological framework in which seismic travel-time constraints, magnetic anomaly patterns, and electrical conductivity data converge to reveal a mobile outer shell and a dynamic mantle. The emergence and maturation of plate tectonics are evidenced by sea-floor spreading concepts, ridge processes, and paleomagnetic interpretations that link crustal motion to mantle convection and oceanic spreading. Quantitative earth models relying on inversion and stochastic approaches began to bound interior properties using diverse datasets, signaling a methodological shift toward model-based geophysics.

Integrated geophysical constraints from seismic travel times, magnetic variations, and electrical conductivity converge on core–mantle structure and chemistry, including sulfur in the core and mantle conductivity patterns [8], [12], [9], [15], [16], [19].

Development of plate tectonics theory in the early 1970s is evidenced by sea-floor spreading, mid-Atlantic ridge extrusion models, and global tectonic implications drawn from paleomagnetic data and oceanic spreading [6], [10], [14], [13].

Paleomagnetism documents crustal motion and polar wandering, using diabase dykes in the Canadian Shield and NeohelikianLoop signals from Lake Superior, illustrating magnetization directions and polar paths [1], [13], [7].

Interpretations of Earth's thermal history from core-mantle gradients, iron melting relations, and sulfur content, framing core evolution and mantle heat flow [5], [2], [11], [12], [4], [20].

Quantitative earth models rely on inversion and stochastic approaches to bound interior properties, using Monte Carlo inversion and interpretation of datasets across travel times, conductivity, and magnetic spectra [17], [18], [15], [19], [16].
